The shack during the winter 2003-4 DX season.
Below the operating position is the power station of
the system. Two Heatherlite Explorers and a TL922 all using 3-500Z
tubes keep the shack warm in winter. These are spread across the
HF antennas to cut down on valve stress and tune up times while
switching from one band to the next chasing rare DX. The amps
are protected by AMP UK 'Soft Start' for smooth power up from
cold at the start of each session. This all helps to prolong the
life of the 3-500's. All the amps use the same valves to make
life easier when it comes to spares. Behind these are various
LPF boxes and a major ground buss. (You can see the copper tube
running along the wall next to some antenna cables). It is so
important to have a good RF grounding sytem to keep this system
as clean as possible. The DC feeds are also under the bench.
